L'antichambre des enfers / Hell's kitchen

Me voilà donc arrivé aux Baños, avec la source d'eau chaude fumant dans l'air froid et dispersants ses odeurs de soufre selon le vent. L'endroit ressembla à une petite oasis au milieu du désert: jsute à proximité du cours d'eau grandissent de grosses plantes et des herbes, mais dès qu'on s'en éloigne de quelques mètres: plus de végétation!

J'ai pas trop le temps d'aprécier la vue qu'il se met à pleuvoir sévère! Je monte la tente vite fait et y resterai caché tout le lendemain! Au milieu de la nuit on a eu pas mal de neige, et le lendemain ca continuait en plus d'etre dans le brouillard. Du coup impossible de s'éloigner de la tente puisqu'on voit plus le sentier et ona besoin d'une bonne visibilité pour voir les piquets qui le mqrquent tous les 100m quand on a de la chance...

Petit bain à la mi-journée quand meme! La source rejette de l'eau à 45-50degC (mesurés avec ma montre ;-) un peu trop chaud (surtout le sable du fond!) pour s'y baigner directement, donc il faut se positionner à l'endroit où elle se mélange à la rivière d'eau froide pour trouver le bon équilibre! C'est pas bien profond, faut s'allonger, et y a de la place que pour une personne, mais sous la neige ca fait du bien! Les nuages se lèvent en soirée pendant 30min pour me permettree d'explorer les environs vite fait.

Le lendemain, temps splendide (on l'a bien mérité!), avec Yan l'Israelien on va à un endroit qui s'appelle Los Geisers. Pas de geisers malheureusement mais plein de mares de boue bouillonnante, des fumeroles à tout va et des couleurs de pierre incroyables! Ca pourrait etre l'antichambre des enfers... Magnifique mais que ca sent mauvais le soufre!

Retour aux Baños pour un dernier bain sous le soleil ce coup-ci et retourner à l'entrée du parc. Comme le lieu est paumé, il a fallu faire du stop pour rejoindre le premier bled avec connection de bus. J'ai quand meme marché près d'une heure avant qu'une bonne ame s'arrète (et c'était pas ceux qui avaient le plus de place dans la bagnole...). Des Chiliens charmants avec lesquels j'ai un peu baragouiné avnt de prendre le bus vers le sud.

So I reach the baños with the hot spring's sulfur fumaroles spreading with the wind. It looks like an oasis in the middle of the desert. There is vegetation just by the river, big plants and some grass. But just a few meters away from the water, nothing grows at all!


I didn't get much time to appreciate the view, heavy rainfalls started. So I hid in my tent, and had to stay in it for the whole next day as well... A lot of snow fell during the night and the day after my arrival, that and the fact that we were in the clouds got me stuck. Impossible to see the trails in the snow, and you need visibility to see the poles and cairns marking the way every 100m (at best...). 

So I waited, took a bath in the hot spring at lunch time, while it was snowing :-) The hot spring's water was between 45 and 50degC (measured with my watch) so a bit too hot, and when touching the sand at the bottom, it was really unbearable... So I had to find a spot with the right temperature where the hot spring goes into the cold river. It was a bit shallow so i had to lie down to be fully immersed. The place was only big enough for one person. Felt good to be real warm while it was snowing :-)


 The clouds cleared a bit for 30min in the evening so that i could explore a bit around. Then the next day, the weather was perfect with clear blue sky. So with Yan, the Israeli guy, we went to Los Geisers. Actually, no geysers to be seen there, but loads of bubbling tubs, sulfur fumaroles and sand/mud of various flashy colors: red, orange, yellow, purple, green... Awesome spot! The fumaroles were really overwhelming, attacking the airways. Looked like hell's kitchen in some ways.


Back to the Baños that same day for a last bath before packing and heading back again. Since this park is kind of lost in the middle of nowhere, i had to hitch hike to the next town with bus connection. I hiked a good 45min before a good soul decided to pick me up and take me to the next town. They weren't even the people with the most space in their car... sweet Chilean couple,  i chatted a bit with them, stuggling a bit with my spanish, but getting there ;-)
