Huayana Potosi |

Huayana Potosi (HP), is the big classic in the region. It's full of tourists because it's a fairly accessible 6000m. Fairly accessible because it does not require much time or technique to summit. Whether your body adapts to the altitude or not is another matter... So Day 1: short walk during 2-3h up to the base camp at 5100m altitude.
There we have some time to rest, then starts Day 2 at 2h in the morning to get the sunrise at the summit before going all the way down again and returning to La Paz. I must say, i did not get much sleep at 5100m, because of the lack of oxygen. The headache i got reaching the base camp disappeared though, only to reappear a bit at the summit. It took us 4h to get to the top of the mountain, walking on snow and glacier, passing crevasses in the dark. We were the first ones to summit with my guide and we were only 5 to witness the beautiful sunrise from the summit. Awesome view over the mountain ranges around and lake Titicaca!
After HP i did the Apolobamba trek (see previous post) and right after decided to climb the Pequeño Alpamayo via the vertical route, to have another type of experience. Since the mountain is 700m lower than HP, it was a very different experience: no headaches this time, being at high altitude over the 2 previous weeks helped a lot i guess. So no headache to tarnish the pleasure of the climb :-) Same idea as on HP: first day with 2-3h hike to reach the base camp before going up in the middle of the night and go back to town the next day. This time we went up with the help of mules. I'm not too proud of this, but you gotta help the local economy ;-)
Pequeño Alpamayo 8am |
Pequeño Alpamayo is without a doubt the most beautiful mountain i have climbed so far and which also was the most fun to me. The experience was very different than Huayana Potosi because i did not get any headache and could therefore really enjoy all of it.
Even Huayana Potosy was not so bad in terms of pain, got really lucky with my aclimizing not like Kilimanjaro 3 years ago which is 200m lower but is to date my most painful experience...
