Me voila donc parti le 8 février pour un mois de navigation en Antarctique sur un fier voilier en acier de 24m qui répond au nom de Vaihéré. Nous sommes 11 en tout, trois marins trés cools: Eric, Antoine et Martin, et 8 passagers (trés cools aussi ;-) de touts ages.

Avant d'atteindre le continent blanc, il faut passer le Passage de Drake réputé pour ses sautes d'humeurs... Les eaux de l'océan Pacifique y passent pour rejoindre l'Atlantique dans cette zone large de 800km. Pour notre voilier ca représente au mieux 3 jours de navigation en mer ouverte entre le Cap Horn et la Péninsule Antarctique, et comme les vagues et les vents peuvent y etre dangereux, on attend une fenetre météo décente pour passer.

Premier jour de navigation facile: Ushuaia - Puerto Williams, on reste dans le canal de Beagle. Le lendemain commencent les quarts pour tout l'equipage: 3h de quart, 5h de repos. Il faut vérifier qu'il y ait pas d'icebergs et que les voiles sont bien ajustées en fonction du vent. Des dauphins nous accompagnent vers le Horn qu'on finit par passer dans la nuit durant mon quart. Et la on sent tout de suite l'effet des vagues: premier vomi juste avant d'aller me pieuter. D'autre suivront mais au bout de 24h on finit par s'y habituer (aux vagues, pas au vomi qui lui s'arrete quand meme ;-) Albatros et petrels se font plaisir en jouant au raz des vagues presque tout le long du Drake.

On file a belle allure pour pour voir nos premiers glacons aprés 3 jours de Drake et apercevoir a la fin de cette journée une fine bande blanche entre la mer et les nuages tres bas: TERRE! ou glace en fait serait plus approprié ;-)

So here we go, heading for Antarctica on february the 8th for one month of sailing on a nice 24m sail boat made of steel and named Vaihéré.We are 11 on board. Three very cool sailors: Eric, Antoine and Martin, and 8 passengers (also pretty cool).

Before reaching the white continent, we need to cross the infamous Drake Passage. The waters of the Pacific Ocean go into the Atlantic Ocean via this 800km wide passage between Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula. The weather can be pretty rough in there so that we have to wait for a decent weather window to cross (fortunately the window was there when we arrived).

The first day of navigation is pretty easy: Beagle Channel from Ushuai to Puerto Williams. The next day we head for the Horn in company of dolphins! Time to start the watch for everybody, we're on a 3h watch/5h rest roll with 3 people at a time. We have to watch for icebergs and for the sails' adjustment for the wind. We pass the Horn while i'm on watch by night unfortunately. We felt thet we entered the open sea right away: the waves become much bigger and i get to puke for the first time just after my watch turn... I'll repeat this several times... Fortunately, after 24h you get used to it, the waves i mean, not the vomitting ;-) that one goes away then ;-) Albatros and petrels play with waves in pretty much the whole passage.

We got a decent speed so that after 3 days of Drake we get to see our first 'ice cubes' and on that same evening we perceive a thin white line between the sea ant the low hanging clouds: LAND! or better said: ice!
