Phoques alors! / Seals: the deal!

Bon voilà, alors en Antarctique, ben y a plein de phoques: des crabiers, des Weddels et des léopards. Pi ya aussi des otaries.

Alors les léopards on les a pas vus et quelque part c'est tant mieux! C'est que ca peut vous bouffer les flotteurs des annexes ces betes-là! J'ai croisé des gens à qui c'est arrivé, ils ont pas trop rigolé. On a vu leurs traces par contre: cadavre de manchot vidé flottant sur la mer...

Weddell

Les crabiers et les Weddels, c'est tout beau quand ca se roule pas sur son guano, mais ca passe essentiellement son temps à se prélasser sur des glacons. Pas très actifs ces guaillards en cette saison: ca attend tranquillement la fin de sa mue annuelle pour retourner l'hiver venu vivre en mer. Sur terre ca fait plutot office de limace, mais une fois dans l'eau, c'est vachement agile et gracieux! Y en a qui sont venu jouer près de notre annexe alors qu'on admirait un glacon, c'était bien sympa!

Weddell

Les otaries en revanche, c'est vachement plus actif! Ca passe son temps à se chamailler ou à se faire la cour on sait pas trop. En tout cas ca grogne direct quand on s'en approche tout près. Y en a une qui m'a coursée alors que je la prenais en photo, j'ai pas fait le malin longtemps et dégagé comme un dératté!
Ah oui, y a aussi les éléphants de mer. C'est que c'est gros et fainéant ces trucs-là, ca pèse entre 500kg et 3 tonnes pour les plus gros males (qu'on a pas vus). Et comme les phoques, ca bouge pas trop quand c'est sur terre. Fait intéressant, ca vit en harem, comme les otaries d'ailleurs!

Well, in Antarctica, there's lots of seals: Weddel, crabeater, leopard, and fur seals essentially.


We haven't seen any sea leopards, and it's not that bad really: apparently they sometimes attack small boats and bite in the inflated floats... i met a guy who was on a cruise ship and his small boat got attacked... one of the floats got pinched, fortunately it wasn't too big of a deal, another small boat came quickly for recue! We saw traces of the sea leopards though: floating empty corpses of penguins...

Crabeaters and Weddels are pretty cute when they don't roll themselves in their own pink crap (pink because of the krill they eat). They spend most of their time chilling on icebergs. They are usually not very active, waiting for their skin to molt (not sure if that's the right english word for 'change of skin) and then return in the water for the winter. On land, they are a bit like huge slugs, but in the water they move fast and very graciously! Some came to play around our small boat while we were admiring a berg from close, pretty cool!


Fur seal on the contrary are rather active: they keep fighting (or flirting) all the time. They roar (sounds like it at least) as soon as one comes to close to them. One ran after me as i was taking a photo of her, i can tell you i ran away pretty fast! Wasn't sure how agressive she would be with me... ;-)


Oh yeah, and there are sea elephants too by the way! These guys like the seals are pretty lazy, spending their day chilling. They weigh between 500kg for the females and 3 tons for the older males (we didn't see any). Interesting fact: they live in harems... like the fur seals by the way!
